The Director                             

Mrs. Heikkila was born in Evanston, Wyoming.  Her love of music began when she started piano at the age of 5 and continued lessons into college.  She played lead roles in several plays and musicals throughout high school and college. After moving to St. George, she eventually began directing a large youth choir and has done so for 13 years.

 

Mrs. Heikkila attended Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) and then transferred to Brigham Young University where she obtained her Bachelors degree in Theatre and Speech. While at BYU she was a member of the BYU Ballroom Dance Team and competed in Blackpool, England, where they won top honors. She received the "Top Teacher Award" from the BYU Ballroom Dance department.


While continuing to pursue her vocal and conducting interests, Mrs. Heikkila received a Bachelors degree in Music and a Masters Degree in Education.  She taught at Fossil Ridge Intermediate school for 8 years.  While teaching at Fossil Ridge Intermediate School, her program grew from 50 students in the show choir to 200 students.  She received the Washington County Teacher of the Month, February 2015.  Her show choir was invited to perform at the Utah Music Educators Conference (UMEA) and the choirs have consistently received superior ratings at the Southern Utah Performing Arts Festival (SUPAF).  Mrs. Heikkila currently teaches at Washington Fields Intermediate as well as Crimson Cliffs High School.  In 2022, the CCHS Chamber Choir was invited to perform for the UMEA Conference. 

 

Mrs. Heikkila currently sings with the St. George Chamber Singers, has sung with Lieto Community Choir and is a member of professional music organizations including UMEA, NAfME, ACDA and the Southern Utah Chapter of Orff-Schulwerk.

 

Mrs. Heikkila loves to do activities with her family.  She has 6 children - 5 boys and 1 girl.  She enjoys running marathons, cycling, triathlons and especially loves waterskiing at Lake Powell. She enjoys traveling, singing and cycling with her husband, Art.
